What is Closed-Loop?

Have you ever heard of the phrase: “there’s more than one way to peel an apple”? Well there’s also more than one way to recycle materials! Closing the loop is a specific waste management process that ensures your recyclables actually get properly recycled and that they are kept in the supply stream (the loop) for reuse.

For glass, using a closed-loop system is the gold standard because glass is infinitely recyclable! That means no matter how many times glass gets collected, crushed, re-melted and re-made into new bottles, it never, ever loses its quality or value. This is a huge deal!!

The alternative for glass is when the material gets “down-cycled”. In a nutshell, this process is when glass gets collected and recycled but instead of keeping the material in the loop, it gets turned into a completely different product, like construction material. Once that’s done, that’s it! The glass can never be reused again to make new bottles and jars.

Why Does This Matter?

Using recycled glass to make new bottles and jars reduces the use of raw materials (sand) that gets dredged from our oceans! It also drastically lowers CO2 emissions during production.
